Verandahs...where southern women in white cotton dresses and flowered hats, sit in cane back rockers, hold conversations. They sip iced tea as the southern summer sun beats down on their brow and beads of sweet sweat run down their backs and perfume the air as their voices hang in the still. These wise and innocent women, chatter and console, giggle and sigh as an unexpected breeze glides in.

Verandahs...where southern women tease and toy, touch and caress as the warm evening air stirs the aroma of magnolias and gardenias. Breezes arouse their southern hearts, these girls of desire and women of modesty. They are discerning, pernicious, salacious, seductive and sumptous. They are women of substance, wit and charm who are singular in form and interwined in spirit and purpose.

Verandahs...where southern women hum in rhythm with the crickets as the crimson sun sets. Their shawls are drawn around milky soft shoulders as the dew settles on rose petals. Moonlight silhouettes sultry figures of the earth women, these women of southern soil.

I stand beneath a giant oak and watch these visions of womanness as they swing in the rhythmic sway of  the porch swing, holding my mind in their measure. These invitors and captivators are amiable and beguiling. They are wanderlust, selfless, stealing and they leave me breathless. These purveyors of enticements and holders of virtue will roll and comfort you, defend and rebel against you, but never mislead you. These women who sit on verandahs.

As quickly as a blink of an eye, they leave the verandah and go inside, locking me out with a click of a latch leaving only the echoes of their voices on the gentle breeze. Dusk lingers and the sweet intoxicating magnolia air swirls around my head as I stand beneath the giant oak and watch the shadows on the lace curtains and long to go inside.
